Back in April, we announced an update to our Fusion Nexus platform with a variety of new features and enhancements. One of these are features is WebRTC support which is a major update to our desktop Fusion Nexus service, specifically for the Phone Manager application. As of April, we introduced support for WebRTC (Web Real-Time Communication) to enhance your communication experience. This update is designed to provide a more flexible and seamless way to make and receive calls directly through your web browser, without the need for traditional SIP clients.
What is WebRTC?
WebRTC is a technology that enables real-time audio and video communication through web browsers without requiring any additional plugins or applications. By leveraging WebRTC, users can enjoy high-quality audio calls directly from their browsers, using the native capabilities of their devices.
Key Features of WebRTC in Phone Manager
With the addition of WebRTC support, Phone Manager now offers several significant benefits and enhancements:
- Web-Based Audio Capabilities: Users can utilise web-based audio capabilities within the browser client, providing an alternative to the conventional SIP client.
- Module-Based Audio Processing: The WebRTC audio has been isolated into a module to process the traffic, bypassing traditional gateways or Session Border Controllers (SBCs). This allows for a more efficient and direct connection.
- Native Browser Capabilities: Devices such as iPads, Chromebooks, and other web-enabled devices can now use their native browser capabilities for calls. This eliminates the need to download any additional applications.
- Enhanced Echo Cancellation and Codecs: By using the default browser’s echo cancellation and evolving codecs, users can enjoy improved call quality that keeps pace with the latest browser technologies.
- Adjustable Configuration: The configuration for using WebRTC remains adjustable by domain, offering flexibility in how it’s deployed and managed.
Benefits of WebRTC Support
The introduction of WebRTC support in Phone Manager brings several key advantages:
- Flexibility: Users can make and receive calls from any web-enabled device, enhancing mobility and convenience.
- Ease of Use: No need for additional applications or plugins; simply use the web browser.
- Improved Call Quality: Take advantage of the latest browser technologies for superior audio quality.
- Cost Efficiency: Reduces the reliance on traditional telephony infrastructure, potentially lowering costs.
Known Feature Limitations
While WebRTC offers numerous benefits, there are some limitations to be aware of. The scope of this version and browser support details are documented under Known Feature Limitations. It’s important to refer to these guidelines to ensure compatibility and optimal performance.
